This isn'ta review for a car, though. The Asskickers, produced by French developer Ago Games, is actually a 2D side-scrolling beat-‘em-up which pales, considerably, in comparison to the aforementioned timeless classic, Streets of Rage. Naturally, it would be unreasonable to expect perfection from a debut title, but even given this introductory leeway, The Asskickers still manages to disappoint. It performs all the same functions as older and more popular titles, but sadly lacks the glamour, the finesse and the style that should go with it.
Many games of this nature present themselves with moderate finesse; however what we have here is entirely over the top in comparison. There’s three characters to choose from, but the selection system is quite buggy, and so you’ll more often than not be forced to play as Alex, the school kid. Alex walks like
he’s previously broken both his legs, jumps like he’s auditioning for Cartoon Network, and delivers one-liners with startling frequency that serve little to no purpose. Painfully, they’re also, always, abysmal clichés. Case and point; “I like girls that play rough, but that’s too rough!
