The King of Fighters '97 improves on its predecessor with superior three-on-three fighting action and a bigger cast of characters.Hailing from the classic period of 2D fighters, KOF'97 concludes the "Orochi Saga" begun two years ago. It's time for another global tournament to crown the best of the best, and again the forces of good and evil intend to use it for their own aims. Who will you side with? The dark forces that wish to resurrect the sinister Orochi
, or the stalwart heroes trying to save the world with their fists?
King of Fighters '97 is a straight-up action game that pits 29 of the greatest videogame warriors against one another in an all-out battle for supremacy. Draft and perfect your team, master special moves and wander the globe facing your opponents in gorgeous arenas. New characters appear and old favorites -- some visiting the ring from other popular SNK games -- return, along with shadowy villains intent on using the tournament for their own evil schemes. It's good to be the king…
Gameplay Modes-KOF'97 includes two special modes of play: Extra and Advanced. Extra mode mimics the classic King of Fighters style found in KOF'94 and '95, with all the rules and special settings from those two games. Advanced mode plays like KOF'96: in this style, each player gets an Advance gauge that fills as you perform special moves and damage your opponent. You can store up to three Advance points (you get one each time the bar fills up) and use them to unleash devastating combo moves on your enemy.
Storyline-The King of Fighters tournaments have long been battlegrounds between those who wish to resurrect the demon Orochi and the brave warriors trying to stop it. This time, despite the tragedy that ended last year's tournament, big corporations are sponsoring teams from around the globe. The Orochi clan has never been closer to its goal, and cracks are beginning to show in the alliance that opposes them. As you climb the ladder, more of the story is revealed, branching based on victories and losses.
Most KOF bouts are one-on-one battles with each combatant belonging to a team of three. You can adjust the order in which you want your teammates to fight on the Team Order screen. Obviously, choose characters who are well-suited against the enemy they'll face.
Remember that you can store up Advance Mode points. Some players like to hoard all three then use them one after the other, often damaging an opponent so badly that there's nothing left but the tears.
Throughout the game you'll face a series of mid-level bosses related to the Orochi cult. The storyline will change based on how you do against these characters -- remember that defeat doesn't necessarily mean "game over," just a different story path.
